School Resource Officer program (SRO)

A partnership between the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District that embeds police officers in the school environment in an effort to provide safe and inclusive educational environments.

The Calgary Police Service has maintained a School Resource Officer program since 1976. Currently, there are 21 School Resource Officers working across senior and junior high schools in the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District. This SRO’s work in the schools as Educators, Mentors and Law Enforcement Officers, ensuring that the school is a safe and inviting environment for learning.

As part of the various components within the School Resource Officer Program, the School Resource Officer works very diligently within the school; monitoring, identifying and intervening when it is identified that a youth have become a part of or has been influenced by a gang. The School Resource Officer working as a mentor to the youth has many resources at his disposal to assist the youth from freeing from the grips of the gang culture.

If you would like to connect with a SRO to discuss any Gang involvement in schools, you can speak to the school who will put you in contact with the School Resource Officer assigned there or call the SRO Gang Hotline at 403-804-5791 24/7.
